Agriculture is one of the main industries in Vulcan County, as shown in the 2008 Agriculture profile.
Agriculture is an evolving industry, and there are many sources of information and programs available to assist producers in management and value added industries.
The Agri-Business Expansion Program is designed to encourage projects and acivities that promote value-added growth, diversification and improved competitiveness in the agri-processing industry. It is intended to complement existing programs of other supporting organizations. Eligible cost sharing (normally 50:50) projects include feasibilitiy studies, mentorship and coaching for improved business operation or expansions, lean manufacturing, investigation of new an innovative technologies, business plan development, product development. If you are an agri-preneur who (at least one of the following); 1. own and operate a farm direct marketing or ag tourism business 2. manage or sponsor an Alberta approved Farmers’ Market 3. are staff or board members of farm direct or ag tourism industry associations 4. are new entrants to farm direct marketing or ag tourism, can apply for a scholarship to help cover costs of conferences, tours or workshops. Agriculture and Agri-food Canada has a listing of programs available including:
- PAVE (Planning and Assessment for Value-Added Enterprises), a program which will help cover the cost of hiring a business planning professional to help develop a feasibility assessment and/or business plan for a value-added business opportunity.
- SBPS (Specialized Business Planning Services), a program which provides assistance to have a consultant develop plans for your farm operation in the areas of succession, expansion, marketing, human resources, risk management and diversification.
