Applications for the Business Opportunity Program Still Being Accepted

The Business Opportunity Program is open to primary producers, producer groups and new entrants to the agriculture industry starting a farming operation.  Applications for this program are being accepted up until December 31, 2012. The program supports activities to assess a new opportunity or start a new endeavour including feasibility studies, opportunity assessments, market research, mentoring and coaching, and business planning. This grant is a big help for small farmers who would like to get into a different farm venture.Examples of eligible activities can be viewed on Growing Forward’s Business Opportunity Grant webpage. These examples include business planning for a young start-up greenhouse operator, market research to sell into retail and food service markets vs. commodity markets and feasibility studies to diversify into new crops or livestock. Applications are supported on a cost-share basis. Grants cover 75 per cent of eligible expenses for approved activities and applicants cover 25 per cent. The grant maximum is $30,000 per applicant.
