Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer: Lyle Magnuson

Lyle magnuson Cancer rideVulcan resident Lyle Magnuson has never biked 100 kilometers in a day before, but he’ll have to do that and then another 100 the next day when he participates Aug. 9-10, 2014, in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer.

“It’s horrible,” said Magnuson of what people with cancer endure. “The stuff I’m going to do, bike a couple hundred kilometers, is nothing compared to what they go through.” It seems like everywhere a person turns there’s someone who some form of cancer, said Magnuson.

Magnuson, who has previously taken part in another cancer fundraiser called Relay for Life, had seen the event on TV the past couple of years and thought he should try it.

He bought a bike last year for the Tin Man Triathlon and it’s now in his garage, set up for stationary riding so he can prepare for next year’s bike rides. He might do some training with niece Kayla Gilette, 23, who signed up for the fundraiser a couple of weeks after he did.

Magnuson has already raised $1,400 so far — he needs $2,500 to participate — and has a personal goal of raising at least $5,000. Funds raised for the Alberta Cancer Foundation through the Ride to Conquer Cancer will directly support patients and families at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary, the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton and 15 cancer centres throughout Alberta.

While Magnuson has plenty of time to accumulate donations, many Canadians give donations for a particular cause in December as individuals and companies are doing tax write-offs, Magnuson pointed out.

“Any size of donation is greatly appreciated,” said Magnuson.
