NEW FIBRE OPTICS INSTALLED WITH ONLY PRIVATE MONEY IN VULCAN, ALBERTA

After initiating a technology brand innovation strategy, prairie town is thought to be smallest in Canada to have fibre optics installed for commercial use with only private dollars

VULCAN – Welcome to Vulcan, Alberta – population: just about 2000.  This small prairie town, most well-known for its association with science-fiction and Star Trek, is warping into the 21stcentury as the first known rural community in Canada to have fibre optics installed using zero public dollars.  Working in conjunction with the Vulcan Business Development Society (VBDS), and its off-shoot, the Vulcan Brand Innovation Team (VBIT), Axia NetMedia Corp. made the announcement on August 22nd, and installation has already begun.  A video of the installation process can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QG0rjzEnhyw .

Axia NetMedia’s investment came about due to the level of demand shown by local businesses for the latest communications infrastructure technology.  Fibre optics consist of strands of glass wires that use light to transmit information.  The broadband capacity of fibre optics in Vulcan alone is enough to carry all of the data information generated in Canada at once.

By being an early-adopter of the technology and moving forward with the plan, the town of Vulcan is sure to be able to attract investment into the community.  The Vulcan and county area has already earned investments worth more than $600 million, including a wind energy project called Blackspring Ridge, currently under construction, as well as with the development of a new modular home assembling facility.  The town also boasts a next to 0% rental vacancy rate, and just 3.58% of all the dwellings in town are for sale.  The community is ripe for investment – and this is thanks largely in part due to its strategic location – mid-way between Calgary and Lethbridge – and the ongoing economic development strategies being undertaken by the VBDS.

With progressive vision, the VBDS and VBIT have been working together with the local town and county in order to help create and deliver on the brand promise that Vulcan is the most technologically advanced small rural community in Canada.  By leveraging the branding associated with science fiction, Vulcan has showcased its willingness to adopt renewable energies, sustainable building development, and high-tech data infrastructure.
